Happy Birthday Daddy

By: Lisa Marie Hutchins

The look of wonderment etched on his face,
When he first held me close all wrapped up in lace.
Me, a little blonde head toddler just starting to talk,
My hand in his hand counting the stars on ou evening walk.
My first day at school as he kissed me goodbye,
Whispering, "You're Daddy's big girl now, so don't you cry."
A quiet night at home, the moment a child wanting to share,
Climbing up in his lap as he gently brushed my hair.
My first cross country run, the proud look on his face,
As I ran through the finish line, winning first place.
My first broken heart on his shoulder I shed my tears,
This man there for me through my troubled teenage years.
Him, right there behind me tightly holding my hand,
Watching his first grandson enter this dear land.
His push of encouragement when I wasn't so sure,
His confidence instilled within me
As I walked through my first apartment door.
For the first times in life, his knowledge there to guide me,
Amazed by the woman I've become, supportive of the woman I want to be.
A man always there through thick and thin,
Not only my "Daddy", but my very best friend.
I love him with all my heart and more than words could convey,
Dad, I'm glad you're mine, have a wonderful Birthday.
