Passion and Pragmatism
You were a beautiful muse of the night
Out on the dance floors where we used to meet.
Smiles filled our waltz, but the time was not right
To dream that I could sweep you off your feet.
Despite the desire I read in your eyes,
Reality tarnished the hope you inspired,
For without employ, my heart would not rise-
Too embarrassed at having just been fired.
Poorly miscast in my supporting role,
I watched you perform on the autumn stage,
As curtains fell on a romantic goal
And the shadows laughed in my green room cage.
Still, I applaud as you seize the limelight-
No proof of solace but these lines I write.
