By A Slender Cord

By: Jemille Ronda Hardy

Like a wizened rabbit
she bounced down the road
she and her water buffalo
joined by a slender cord

Protected in my metal chariot
I hunted ghosts of my heart
dragged to death by
chains of how

I know I can be free
as the buffalo lady
and gentle the beast
that would not let me
blaze the colors of my sky

We are the color and the sky
My heart springs open
I see you anew
My soaring love
