The Little Butterflies

By: Geoff Houtman

The little butterflies that churn your stomach
when you don’t know what to say,
the knot in your throat
when the words won’t come out,
the tremble in your lips
when you look at the girl you want to love,

the wishful look from your eyes,
the shiver of total happiness
when she passes by,
the racing heart and shallow breaths of air,
the horrible need to be loved,
the times when you never look away

the words unspoken-
but sometimes that’s even more special
the endless thoughts of bliss
racing through your mind... it's ecstasy.
The total need for things to be right,
with the hopeful but unanswered dreams.

The words that will never be said
and the heart that controls you...
When your words are meaningless
and your heart takes over,
when there’s nothing that can show
exactly the way you feel,
when you never want to leave her.
When your legs feel like jelly
and it’s impossible to stand,

when your heart overpowers all reason,
the steps to her door feels like the stairway to heaven,
when time itself stands still
as she looks deep into your eyes.
And when no one else seems to matter
and if the world came to an end you wouldn’t care
since you’d be with her... looking to her
because you couldn’t possibly ask for anything more.

The time when you feel
that nobody else could feel this much love...
the time when heaven itself seems
that much closer to your heart.
The very second that slows to forever...
when she’d look deep into you soul
and then wouldn’t turn away.
You know it's something
other than what you are willing to describe...
something much deeper.

There’s no turning back now.

But then you look further into her eyes
finally realizing that you’ll never have her...
that she’ll never be yours.

She’ll never be mine… Why?
God, I wish I knew…
