Waiting by Candlelight

By: Sarah M. Finley

I wait for thee by candlelight,
Seeking a rescue that seems like it will never come,
I close my eyes;
The soft light flickers still behind my eyelids,
I feel a single tear roll down my face,
I open my eyes and look out the window,
Towards the sky, with it's mulitude of stars,
"Where are you?", I ask myself.

I turn back to the single candle,
I stare deeply into it's center,
Wiping my tears.

A solitary tear drops into the flame,
The room plunges into total darkness,
Sighing, I fall upon my soft pillows,
I close my eyes and let the world of dreams overtake me,
In those dreams,
I'm so happy,
You're beside me,
You care for me,
You protect me,
Heaven knows that I need protecting,
If not from someone,
From myself.

Every night,
I light the candle,
Talking silently to you,
Loving you with a passion I can't describe.

For my lover, Sam, whom
I would wait forever for.
