Friendship Without A Face

By: Johnna Marie Puckett

A smiling 'hello' welcomed me to a world of hope.
A friendly word of encouragement enlightened my hurtful desires.

Every morning
You reminded me
That no matter what-
The sun was still shining
And things would get better.
A faint smile came your way in return

Because bluebirds never seemed to sing
For the friendship without a face.

You never let me down.
The impossible was treasured
through my believing eyes.
Every afternoon
You fought even harder
To maintain the smile on my face,
Then you worked to keep even a drop
Of happiness in your life.
But eyes of shame looked deep into you

Because bluebirds never seemed to sing
For the friendship without a face.

With every right move you made
Twice as many wrong ones were returned.
I seemed to let you down
Over and over again.
Scars from my past
Invaded your perfect lifestyle
But you still walked as if it never fazed you.
Every night
You looked into my eyes with such hope
And swore that they shone
Even brighter than the stars.
But tears wet your comforting shoulder in return

Because bluebirds never seemed to sing
For the friendship without a face.

You offered hope, happiness, and overall perfection
But I missed my chance.
I let you down too many times.
Forgiveness only goes so far.
For when I finally offered my friendship to you in return
Your face was so wounded by my scars
That all that looked back at me... was a blur.
I never had the chance to look into your eyes.
I never saw your precious face
And the bluebirds never sang...

Because the bluebirds never seemed to sing
For the friendship without a face.
