Thank You

By: Nicole Anne Randall

I’ve racked my brain.
I’ve thought of everything
I could possibly think of.
I wanted to give you the perfect gift,
but nothing quite measured up.
So I decided on something
that couldn’t be delivered or bought...
something I knew would stay with you
and not be easily forgotten.
I decided to write you a poem
to let you know what you’ve done for me,
to tell you how very special you are
and what you will always mean to me.

You were always around,
and I never gave it much thought
until, one day, you looked different,
and my eye was suddenly caught.
We talked more and more.
Each other's problems we solved.
We both knew our friendship had evolved.

I’ll always remember your weakness-
for a moment you let me see.
I remember the happiness it brought,
knowing you just wanted me.
You listened to my problems,
you listened to my dreams.
We talked about life and love-
you’d been there, too, it seemed.

I never once felt judged by you.
It seemed you knew just how I felt.
You accepted me
and all the problems I’d been dealt.
You didn’t interrupt me
when I didn’t quite know what to say.
You just listened very patiently
and didn’t go away.

You opened up my heart,
even though I was so scared.
There was something about you,
and I couldn’t help but care.
You’ve made me feel things
I never again wanted to feel.
But there is a place deep down inside me
that you have magically healed-
a place you have touched so sweetly,
a place no one else has been,
a place where you have opened all the windows
and let the sunshine in again.
You have made me feel again,
little by little, bit by bit.
You are the one who gave me back my heart,
but will always keep a piece of it.

There is one more thing I have to say
before my poem is through.
And that is, thank you so much
for simply being you.
