Figments

By: Joshua Louw

I'll remember that I cherished
Your phantom form as my own
Though the world in which I knew you
Was less than I had known
Yet deeper in emotion --
The love I had outgrown.

I'll remember satin hearts,
The movements of your comb
Sliding through samite curls --
In dreams you made your home
From imaginary ailments
And seeds that I had sown.

I'll recall your skillful browsing
Through books that I once owned
While you hummed the theme of Juliet
With a lilt in your musical tone
And the smiles we shared were naked
In the glow of our dented dreamlike dome

That covered the piercing velvet stares
That stripped me to the bone --
That peeled my mind
For your scrutiny alone;
All else remains fantasy
For in reality
Your eyes are like ice.
Your lips... made of stone.
