Yesterday's Jewel

By: DeAnna L. Renfro

Her emerald eyes glistened
Ruby lips trembled
Emotions running deep

Hidden in the darkness of sapphire skies
Her dreams continued
Night after night

Like a string of pearls
Each dream, so very much like the others
The variations, so subtle
The differences can not be seen
In the harsh reality of daylight

And so bled her heart
Slowly cracking and crumbling
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
What was once a diamond
Becomes a lump of coal
