A Young Wife and Mother

By: Mary-Ellen B. Kelleher

Did she sit
and did she sit
and did she sit
and spin?

And did she weave
and sew for you
to cover
your bare skin?

And did she boil
the kettle
and stew the
spuds and meat?

And did she give
you bairns* Asthore**
all toddling
at your feet?

And did she teach
those young ones
to love and praise
the Lord?

And did she keep
a tidy home,
all neat and clean
and warm?

And did she plant
those roses that
creep 'round
your cottage door?

And when you laid
her in the ground,
did you wish
you'd loved her more?

*bairns=children
**Asthore=treasure/dear
