The Last Word

By: constance therese chojnacki

The last thing you said to me
broke my heart.
It wasn't until later I realized it.

A single thought tore us apart.
An innocent word remained.
Why didn't I know, so would the pain?

The last touch of your hand,
the last word from your mouth,
then made me happy.
Now brings me to tears.

Just like how a baby's first word
remains in memory.
your last word remains in me.
Though the mother cries tears of joy,
my eyes cry tears of pain.

I can't let go of who you are
but try to let go of that last minute with you.
Because that last minute, that last word,
Ended all hope... ended all happiness.
I never want to hear good-bye again.
