A Long, Cool Drink
Consume me like a long, cool drink,
That's what I say to you—
Stop running your fingers through your hair
So self consciously—
You look fine!
You look marvelous.
And I love you.
So, back to the topic:
Pick up the glass—
It's chilled for you,
Chilled to perfection.
Prepared for you,
Such a tall, cool drink;
Take a sip—it's all for you.
This is how I want you to take me—
It's the promise you made,
Silently,
When we first fell in love,
When innocence was all abound
And things were fresh and new—
And sometimes they so often are,
Even now,
With you.
So, forget the gray at your temples,
Forget the way we eat like birds;
The two of us have been together
So long,
We communicate without words
And it's right—it's only natural.
So you should know what I want before
I say it,
But I know how sometimes you like to
Pretend;
It feels novel, it feels new,
To behave as though you have no idea
What I'm thinking . . . of what I really want.
But I want to be a tall, cool drink to you,
I want you to down me like fresh lemonade;
I want you to sip me nice and slow and
Oh so low,
Just like the old days . . .
We're still young at heart,
We always have been,
And you always knew how to keep us young;
So, reach out for me darling,
Touch me, love me,
Forget these wrinkles,
Forget all the time that's passed
Between then,
And now . . .
Let's both take a sip of lemonade my darling,
And drown in the flavor of
Love . . .
