No Man's Land

By: Jessica Flores

Please tell me how I was to know what was to come.
Forgive me...
I did provoke you, made you succumb.

Slowly I placed you in the palm of my hand,
And you blindly fell in,
Without warning that you were entering "no man's land."

Finally the moment of truth arrived.
You kissed me.
Fool was I to think I'd survived.

Never did I know the mask I had hidden behind melted.
So I carried on,
Not knowing the heart it pelted.

At last, the truth was seen.
I recognize it was wrong to play you,
And what was to come, I had never foreseen.

The chance to love you came on,
But it was too late.
You, my battered lover, had bled and withdrawn.

Please tell me how I was to know what was to come.
Forgive me...
Now I truly understand why I've left you numb.
