A Tiny Bronze Shoe
The sadness so thick
you can bite it in air
This place, so crowded
but overwhelmingly bare...
Stepping over boards
as ashes blow
They bring a woman out
who doesn't want to go.
Trying so hard
to stop the flames
To put an end
to the fire's games...
I can hear the mother
screaming for her child
The blaze is too strong
too far from mild.
More firemen rush in
as the mother screams
Then sings a lullaby
to soften her dreams.
The humming stops
as she begins to choke
She passes on
her lungs full of smoke.
It seemed so silent
as the sky turned grey
The firemen come out
with no words to say.
No bodies to recover
nothing left to do
As they walk away
with a tiny bronze shoe.
