Love With Strings

By: LeAnn Puglisi

What you requested, I now do.
Enclosed, please find gifts to me from you:
A watch, a bracelet, some books, perfume.
Your cards and music are here, too
Some things with strings you now want back
to make up for something else you lack
So take them out and throw them where you may,
the box will be as empty as your soul that way.

But in the box return to me the gifts I gave so openly
My love unconditional, my laughter, too;
my passion and trust I ask back anew
Can't do that, can you? Those gifts were free;
No strings attached to ego or money
A flame still burns with a flickering lovelight;
buried deep in anger and out of sight
Forgiveness would wash your anger away;
or keep the bitterness, if that's your way.

The choice is your own, you do as you must;
Let the mirror reflect Tuesdays... or darkness and rust.
