Lady of the Night

By: Nadia Varkovsky

Once upon a time
There was a man with no name
Who led a meaningless life
‘Cause love always passed him by.

The biting cold of winter soon arrived
Along with dreadful loniness.
He gathered everything that he had and set out
To seek the company of the lady of the night.

His journey carried him to a mysterious island
Surrounded by sand and water,
Devoid of the sun and the moon...
A place where faraway travelers constantly came and went.

The man with no name
Entered the domain of the lady of the night
Where he had the time of his life
Like he has never experienced before.

Days and even weeks passed by
And he could not forget her,
Always dreaming of the day
When they would meet again.

One day there was a knock at his door.
The man with no name asked,
"Who is there?"
And the reply came...

"This is love, may I come in?"
The man with no name was confused
"Love," He asked,
"What do you want?"

"I want to reside in your heart," love replied,
"I want to make you happy."
The man with no name said,
"I’ve always wanted to be happy, please come."

Love, then softly said,
"I will come but you have to remember one thing
Once you let me in
You have to accept all of me."

"Are you sure this is what you want?"
The man with no name nodded silently
Before he opened the door
And was greeted by a stream of light.

When the brightness dissipated
There were two figures standing,
One of them was love
And the other one was pain.

What love said came true.
The man with no name became very happy indeed
And life was good for awhile
With love watching over the two of them.

The illusion was soon shattered,
When pain began to interfere.
The man with no name became angry
Because pain wouldn’t go away.

He did everything he could to make pain leave
But pain refused to go no matter what.
The man with no name begged endlessly
But pain only tightened its grip even further.

The man with no name grew desperate
So he asked love, who simply said
"I warned you at the beginning
That you have to accept all of me."

The man with no name said,
"I didn’t know it was going to be so hard
To be in love with the lady of the night,"
And so love told him a secret

"There are only two ways to destroy pain," it said.
"What are those?" He asked.
"Either she must return your love or
You must give her up completely."

Upon hearing this
The man with no name cried
Because he loved her so
And he didn’t want to give her up.

In spite of the pain,
The man with no name still perseveres
Because faith is all he has left
Hoping that the lady of the night will be his someday.

No matter how long it takes
No matter how much pain is felt.
The man with no name will be there,
With undying hope burning in his heart.
