Candle

By: SweetGirl

The last candle you lit for me
Was the one with dinner as we drank our tea.

It burned so slowly as we took our last bite,
Then we lay on the couch and you held me tight.

You kissed me so softly as you stared into my eyes.
My lips followed yours as tension died.

I laid my head upon your chest.
I could hear your heart as you let me rest.

We fell asleep watching TV,
Holding you, you holding me.

We awoke to birds chirping their song.
You were almost late; you couldn't take long.

You kissed me Goodbye, said, "I'll see ya tonight."
And walked out the door into the sunlight.

That candle had burned all night long.
I went to blow it out, but sensed something wrong.

The phone rang; the candle still burning,
I said, "Hello," as my mind was yearning.

They told me what happened; I dropped the phone.
They said you were dead; now I'm all alone.

The candle that burned--if only I knew,
Was not for me; it stayed lit...for you.
