Crippled Kings

By: James Walters

What fortunes had they promised;
What charms had they displayed?
What spells had they incanted
That left you so amazed?
What glory had they garnered
To make you give them laud;
What powers had you witnessed
For you to make them gods?
Deserting sacred beliefs
By honoring these ghosts,
You sacrificed the treasures
That once you valued most.
Then emptiness engulfed you
Till finally you asked
What need have I of crippled kings
Whose favors never last?
