Love Never Dies

By: Nadia Varkovsky

The clock had struck twelve
And everything was silent
Moments passed; dawn began to break
As people were still tucked in their blankets

In a corner not far away
A man sat against an old oak tree
His face solemn and twitching in anguish
'Cause love had denied him everything...

It all began sometime in the past
Neither he nor anyone could remember when,
But it is the starting point
The beginning of the beginning...

It happened in spring,
When flowers were blooming
And lovers strolled along the park
Embracing and holding each other's hand

He was sitting alone on the bench
As a girl suddenly sat beside him
A conversation started not long after
And they agreed to meet again

Days passed and they started going out
On weekdays he would pick her up after work
On Saturdays they would go to the movies
or eat ice cream together
On Sundays they would go to the church

Days turned into months as their relationship got deeper
Plans of marriage were constructed
Friends and relatives came to congratulate them
Everyone was waiting for the designated "day" to come

Then something tragic happened unexpectedly
And his life would never be the same again
Neither did anyone know what would happen
For fate and destiny are beyond our control

It was a cold winter night
And the two lovers were driving down an icy road
The wheels slipped abruptly; the man lost control of the car
And then there was only blackness

His future wife was immediately ferried across the Styx
But he was spared and was in a coma
When he awoke, he sensed a different atmosphere
And so he was told of what had happened two months ago...

He never returned to his normal state
His best friends tried to persuade him to forget
And his family took him on vacation
There was nothing they could do to lessen his pain

And so he spent his days thinking
Remembering all the things they had done
Crying over the memories that were still vivid in his mind
His mind was basically dead yet his body still lived

He could remember the time they went camping
Two lovers far, far away from civilization
The time he taught her to count the stars
Whenever darkness replaced daylight

And so he began to visit the oak tree in his backyard
That they used to lean on whenever they wanted
to look at the sky
Staring at the starry night and being close to each other
When a perfect solution suddenly came to his mind

He circled a rope on the tree's strongest branch
And tied the other end to his own neck
He slowly climbed the tree and jumped without any hesitation
The rope tightened and then it was over in a few seconds...

He was discovered the next morning
A peaceful smile etched across his face
His body stiff and cold, limp above the ground
Swaying slightly back and forth propelled by the wind

When his body was lowered
A note was discovered in his pocket
It was crumpled and three words were written on it
It simply said: "Love never dies..."
