The Heart On A Shelf

By: Debra Sue Helms

Here I sit all alone
wondering what to do,
covering the crack
left by losing you.

I sit here quietly
keeping to myself
my hopes and dreams,
just a heart on a shelf.

He stops to take a look
"Hey" I tell him, "careful there,
don't pick me up to quickly.
See the sign, Handle With Care?"

He managed to look inside
whispering to me "be yourself."
As he holds me gently I smile big.
No longer am I the heart on a shelf.
