For you my son

By: Mary Alice Voss

Your Papa served in World War II
His Dad in World War I
your Daddy served in Vietnam
and then we sent you- our son.

Off to the Navy,
oh, I was filled with pride,
I also knew I would miss you,
and, yes, when you left... I cried.

Well, you've been in the Navy now
two long eventful years,
I'm filled with joy when you come home
and when you leave... more tears.

You see, when you are somewhere
I feel that I'm there, too.
In my heart I walk in front
to help you make it through.

I live for calls and letters
I wait for each one of those-
and sometimes in the dark of night
I'd like to hold you close.

That's the sacrifice we make,
we Mother's of these sons,
who march with heads held high
watching as we cry.

For, you see, we remember the little things,
like playing in the sand.
We remember walks in the park,
when you would take my hand.

You are the boys we took such care of,
the ones we rocked to sleep,
those are the memories we carry
and the ones we'll always keep.

I love you Jason...
Mom
