The New Sound of Country
by Stephanie L. Bebermeyer

He used to watch me sleep
And sing love songs
Along with the country radio station in the car.
He said that they reminded him
Of me and him and us.
We used to have fun,
Singing at the top of our lungs with the car windows down
As we drove the streets of East Lansing on sunny afternoons,
Me singing better than the radio
And him singing almost out of tune,
especially when the song was high.
I was never much into country music
But when it was playing in his car it sounded different.
Real. Sweet. Fun. Vibrant.

He doesn't sing to me any more,
And who knows whether
He watches me sleep at night.
Sometimes we go out to dinner
...When I haven't gone shopping for groceries
And he doesn't have anything better to do.
We live complacently,
Somehow separated from ourselves.
It seems that we have sex more often than we make love, now,
But he insists he still means it.
I haven't listened to country music lately.
Every song sounds the same to me.
Lost dogs. Broken hearts. Shattered dreams.

There a new melody in the air.
I'm not sure either of us knows it well enough
...To sing along.
