The Lake and Her
by Alan L Balter

The lake, at once blue and clear
rolls ashore in liquid whispers
to wet the dune grass standing like
a billion sentinels in a vast, verdant brigade

As a child, I played in it and caught
minnows in a frayed handkerchief
which, in my imagination so free, became
a bold fisherman?s net for fearsome sea creatures

And as a young man, I carried a
blue eyed girl into the cold waves where
we warmed each other and spoke of
all the sweet things that life would bring us

Now, old and bent, I sit onshore of the
great lake and reflect upon the wonders of the
waters and the woman I love more than
my life
