This Morning
This morning I watched you sleeping
as the sun began to shine,
and I was so filled with wonder
that anything so beautiful could ever be called mine.
So as you slept I stayed awake,
and I couldn't help but shed a few tears
because joy was overwhelming me,
that I finally had you here.
So many times I tried to ask you
if you might want to stay,
but I couldn't ever say the words
because I was too afraid.
And now here you are beside me,
breathing, slow and deep,
like a perfect secret
that I could never keep.
