Rising Waters

By: Rachel Marie Kelly

The sea rises all around me enticing me to go under.
The cold, dark water is filled with salty tears
that have fallen from my blood shot eyes.
For many days I have cried hundreds, thousands,
even millions of tears
for my life is filled with uncertainty and pain.
I'm falling under but I do not struggle.
My body goes limp and lifeless
as my lungs fill up with my own tears.
Suddenly, as if a ray of light out of a storm
I see you reaching out to me
with a sweet smile on your face
and the laughter that brings hope to my soul.
I know I must come back to you
and step away from what cannot be reversed.
Kicking my legs with all the strength
left in my sponge-like body
I come back to the surface.
Patiently you wait with extended arms ready to console me.
I run to you and embrace you
as I have no one else.
As we hold onto each other
you whisper in my ear,
"Life will be bright and wonderful
but if I feel as if I'm going under
you'll be there to pull me to the surface!"
