moonlit sky

By: CCH

as i look out to a moonlit sky,
i begin to wonder how something
that is so far away can shine so bright.
i stare at the moon...i begin to pick at it...
finding all the faults around it
counting each crater...each bump...each void.
but then i begin to look deeper...
to analyze exactly what i see,
and i begin to realize
that there is something more to this moon
than all the faults outside...
because, for something so far away
to give off such wonderful light...
there has to be more.

i close my eyes and imagine
what night would be like
without the light of the moon...
what life would be like...
and i can't.
it's the strangest and most lonely feeling.
it's odd to describe
the serenity that comes from the moon...
knowing that it is always going to be there...
always going to light the way
whenever you are lost...
it is always going to be a part of your life...
that is the safest and most comforting thought of all.

when i open my eyes again and stare back at the moon...
all those faults i once saw are no longer there.
they have vanished... like magic.
it's almost like a new moon
has taken the place of the one before...
but i know that both are just as wonderful,
and just as bright.
and none of the faults matter anymore,
because it hits me- this little far away object
lets off such an illuminating light...
because it comes from the inside...
and it is so powerful and strong
that it bursts right through
everything else.

then i realize this incredible gift
indirectly given to me...
and the gift isn't the moon...
and it isn't the light...
it's the reflection...
it's the knowledge...
it's the comfort...
it's you.
