First Call to Love
by Richard Gabriel Prieto

Love is a battle...
Itís plain to see.
It takes courage and valor...
Do I have that in me?

If it comes down to friendship...
What shall I do?
Shall I forfeit my friends;
Just to be close to you?

Itís hard to think clearly...
To be proud or be strong.
I canít sleep at night...
I have waited so long.

If you really must ask...
How I got your number.
I suppose I'll tell the truth...
Well, it was sort of a blunder.

I came across your school schedule...
In the office one day.
I hope you donít mind I've called you...
Thatís what I'll say.

Now I reach for the phone...
My fingers hesitate.
I have to hear your voice...
I canít fight fate.

I start to dial your number...
Then I hang up the phone.
I am really quite nervous...
Will she say, "Leave me alone?"

I dial your number again...
I let it ring this time.
Filled with anticipation and fear...
Of what lies on the line.

I have waited so long...
For this dream to come true.
But itís not your voice...
No, what I hear is not you.

Weeks led up to this moment...
But what came brought me down.
Older brother answered the phone and said:
"Sorry, she's out of town"

The resulting good bye,
Still rings in my ear like thunder.
Will I have enough courage...
To try again, I wonder?

As the time ticks by...
I sit here and wait.
Each passing moment...
Brings me closer to fate.

What exactly will happen?
There is no way to tell.
Will you like me or not?
This could be heaven or hell.

Nothing more to do...
Then to watch time pass by.
Until the time comes to call...
And to hear you say 'Hi'
