Sarcophagus
by Joshua  Louw

In the merciless dark of emotions
I linger
Where lovers entomb me -
Trapped in their folds
I am a spider
Scurrying from its own web

While all the days, the nights, the hours
Spent in the company of love
Serves to crush and mold me -
To placate and console me -
To enter immutable shapes
From which I cannot, and never shall escape.

Once I was a King, now merely dust
Calling for its echo in sepulchral tones -
Decorating darkness in a jeweled box -
Trapped in this burial chamber of the heart

Where emotions surround me -
Their force gives me form, shaped by their art
For love is my casket
And I am its corpse -

Lost in little moments, these memories
Of summer days on the pyramid sands -
Sharing and declaring Ra's true sunset
Or traces made by indelicate hands -
All these have fled, and I am alone -

Bereft of choice by my lack of emotion

I linger
