Thou Art My Breath and Death

By: Ingrid Showalter Swift

Thou art my breath and death,
my sea and shore
...my planet and my sun

Thou art earthquake and volcanic make

Thou art my soul to bed
and my soul to rise
and my soul-streaming with light across the darkened sky

Thou art my hurricane and my drought,
my walking in and my going out

Thou art, my quietest whispers and my loudest roars,
my shaken sugar and my salt stores

Thou art my morning light and my restful night,
my secret and my friend

Thou art my ultimate undoing
and my doing it again

Thou art my deepest injury and my gentlest of mend

and I pray that 'Thou Art' shall be
from millennium to end...
