Christmas Whisper
I whispered, "I love you, Dad," as you tucked me into bed
The lights outside were blinking a brilliant green and red
You paused surprised at the words I had just spoke
I realized them the next morning as soon as I awoke
A slip of the tongue expressing how I felt
The term 'stepfather' had at last begun to melt
You were my only dad, raising me from a child
Taming me, all the times I was going mad and wild
Just being in your presence soothed me in a blink
Helping through the tough times, smoothing every kink
That Christmas I accepted just who you were to me
I also think, just then, you were truly able to see
I was planted firmly, a little piece of your heart
Remaining there for years until we had to part
Every night I repeat that blissful phrase I once said
I whisper, "I love you, Dad," as I lay myself down for bed
