Autumn In My Heart

By: Michael Anthony Furtado

There’s an autumn in my heart.
Leaves are tumbling down the hills
Where once you walked effortlessly;
You knew where you were going.

Even I was lost, then.
Frosted mornings in my soul
You could warm with a glance,
Soulful.

You looked right through me,
There was nothing to stop you.
What I had taken for defenses were useless,
You ignored them. You knew me.

Overcast days marked your passing,
You lit them brilliantly
When you brushed them
With your heart.

Useless to hide,
Your gaze was relentless,
Coloring the leaves, an endless chorus of color,
Now still and darkening.

These hills long for your return.
