By & Bye

By: Kristine Beulke

Upon the hill, high in the castle,
she'd stop and stare on every hour.
She'd gaze upon the rolling hills
and take in the beauty that it instills.
Whence down upon the water she stared.
She caught a stranger standing there.
His hair of gold and his horse of splendor,
would bend to drink of the deep clear water.

Now in her mind she always thought,
the riches and the treasures brought
had filled her life until this day.
When she realized what was astray.
And she spoke softly to herself
through whispered tears.
"My hearts desire is at the rivers bend".
I fear my heart will never mend.
If upon his lips I never press.
If love doesn't replace this loneliness.

Down at the water looking down with dismay.
He laid a hand upon his bay.
I know she's there came quickly thought.
The one my heart has always sought-

Now the father of this maiden swore,
a daughter naught he'd loose again.
And banished her to her room, fair maiden!

Until one day whence he was away,
she took of flight that day in May.
And walked upon the rolling hills,
and danced with butterflies
and swayed with willows.
And by and bye she wandered back.
And by the water she paused to nap.
And in her dreams the stranger came.
And naught again was either seen..
