She Believes
by Megan Lynn Robertson
She believes in a better tomorrow
but until then...
her eyes will stay wide open
so afraid to close
because they know that darkness only brings pain
as they close tighter and tighter
false security flutters from her eyelids
the love she thought she possessed
quietly slips away
leaving her alone to face an empty reality
shame on her for holding on so tightly
for wasting countless tears on dreams of yesterday
longing for what really never was
and allowing herself to stay
this awakening
long overdue
proves to be the strength that helps her make it through
those lonely, hopeless nights
