Unfair.
by Donna S Brock
I love you more than life itself,
so these words are hard to say.
I need you more than anything,
but for you I'd walk away.
If I'm what's keeping you
from a love you think is true,
then don't let me hold you back,
do what you need to do.
If her name lingers in your ears,
her scent upon your mind,
then I could never be the girl
your soul longs to find.
If her face is burned in your memory,
your thoughts she fills each day,
then do what it is you long to do.
I won't stand in your way.
My heart will ache, my world will crumble,
my eyes will fill with tears,
But at least the one I love will be happy
through the years.
Don't let the life you promised me
keep you from the dreams you share with her.
Broken hearts heal with time,
but as for regrets, they have no cure.
Don't let your heart be troubled
if her lips you long to kiss.
Don't linger here if being there
seems much better than the love I'll miss.
Don't hold me close and whisper
the words you mean for someone new.
Love has no meaning in this world
if it's built on hearts untrue.
Don't hold me close to you at night
and caress my face,
when inside you're longing for another
to take my place.
Just walk away this instance.
Go build the dreams you both share.
I can pretend I don't love you,
even if it is unfair.
