Whispers
by Faozia Nael Aljibawi
Don't be sad if you gave them your life, gave them your happiness,
gave them your energy and time,
gave them your heart and mind,
granted them everything beautiful in your life,
gave them everything you could... and...
they denied you and left,
leaving you with their memories.
Don't be sad if you extended your hands out to them
and they left you empty handed.
Don't be sad if you discovered that the time is no longer your time
and their heart no longer has room for you,
and that after you gave them your life, your love, your time...
they left you,
confirming that you have expired and that your time has ended.
Don't be sad if you can't forget them
and constantly think of them.
Don't be sad if you found yourself on a page in their book
and read their love words to you written in between the lines
and at the end of the page, you found their decision to leave you.
Don't be sad if you heard a song they sang,
or smelled the cologne they used,
or walked the road you walked together
and realized they are no longer here.
Don't be sad if they continue to live within your soul
and their name is engraved in your heart.
Don't be sad if you become a passer on their mind
or a living memory while they continue to live in your heart
and run through your veins.
Don't be sad if the sunsets
and you go to bed with their picture by your side,
and they go to bed with the thought of another in their head.
Don't be sad if you whisper their name in the darkness of the night
as you hold their picture and kiss it good night.
