A Poem for Mother
by Jessica  Jonsgaard

Mother, I know lately that we have had our differences.
And I know that you are struggling with this time
From my growing from childhood to adulthood,
And I too am having a difficult time
Accepting that truthful fact
That I will no longer be a child.

There are times when I say things that hurt you.
And I always wish I could take them back.
I always get confused
With what you want for me
And with my right to choose for myself.
You forget that the decisions
I make are based on my own perceptions,
And you make unfair judgements of them
From your perspective.

You know that I deserve the chance
To learn about life, just as you once did
You mistakenly think you can keep me
From possible future mistakes
And the pain that may lie ahead,
But you really don't know how
The future will be affected
By my actions of today.

There are times when I feel that
You can't relate to anything in my life
But you see yourself in me at the same age
And all you want to do is protect me from harm
When what you have to do is
Find the courage to set me free.
Our relationship is changing,
And so are we.
If we understand each other,
We can see this time through together.
The one thing that will never change
Is our love for each other,
And that is all that really matters.
