GoodBye My Friend
by Colleen L O'Connor
She sits alone on the sandy shoreline hoping for a miracle.
She knows that fate has had it's final say for them.
Silently the tears roll down her wind burnt face as she waits for him,
knowing full well now that she will only see him in her dreams.
They were the best of friends, even though they both wanted more.
They were naive to believe they could be anything else.
She dated one of his best friends for a while, that's how they met.
He was there for her to cry on when the relationship was over.
He was there to make her smile again.
Now he is gone and no promises or wishes can ever bring him back.
She never admitted to anyone how she felt about him, not even to him.
Now she wishes she could do it all over again
and this time get it right. But the guilt just won't subside.
She should have been with him. But she had said no.
For the first time in her life she regrets saying that word, 'no'.
The call had come in a little before eleven that night,
it had been her ex-boyfriend.
When he broke the news that her angel was now the real thing
she felt her heart break and a wave of disbelief washed over her.
"He can't be dead", she thought, "we only spoke a few hours ago."
But as the reality slowly sank in she started to shake
as her knees gave out from under her.
Now she didn't even know how she had gotten to the beach,
all she wanted was her Tony back. The angelic face
and that sweet innocence he possessed.
But God had his say and you can't change what is done.
She sits by the shore as the waves crash solemnly
against the sand, as if they were in mourning too.
She is talking out loud hoping he can hear what she is saying.
She loved him and never told a living soul...
Not even her best friend knew how far head-over-heels she was.
In all actuality she still hadn't told a living soul.
But he knows now that gave her some consolation.
As she prepares to face reality again, the first of many lonely tears
trickle down her cheek. She will always love him and always miss him
with all her heart. I love you Tony.
