Test the Waters
by David Felix Marcos Damian
Side by side, hand in hand
as we walk on the sand,
laughing and talking about everything,
There isn't anyone else with whom I'd rather be.
As we look out towards the waters,
we ask each other and wonder
how far can we go
before our hands would have to let go
and we'd have to begin to swim alone?
But would that be as much fun
as just strolling on the sand in the open sun?
Let's test the waters just you and I
by spending time with each other.
Let's not be in a hurry;
let's take each step slowly.
Let's start off by walking ankle deep
and then after awhile, up to our knees.
The next step we take, let it be up to our waists.
At this point the waves will be crashing in.
Trying to throw us off balance.
Up to this point, if every step we've taken
has caused us to react,
Then, my darling, we're moving too fast.
It wouldn't be wrong to back up a bit
and to start all over again.
Before you know it,
we'll be in water up to our chests.
And with a few more steps, we'll be up to our necks.
Soon afterwards, we'll be on tippy toes.
Our hands now ready to let go,
its time to swim alone,
just you and me in the open sea.
However, we need to be careful, my darling,
that we don't swim out too deep.
For there are hidden dangers
whenever you cannot touch bottom with your feet.
Once again I ask this question:
Will swimming alone be as much fun
as strolling together on the sand in the open sun?
There is so much we can do before plunging in,
like building sand castles and leaving silly footprints.
I believe we can have fun swimming together,
as long as before we go in
we test the waters.
