The River
by Joshua Louw
A glittering river flows between us.
How long it has been there I never knew
As the waves of the world became unimportant
At the moment the truth became all too true.
My hopes and fears, my faith and trust
Meant nothing, till that instant the sun touched you.
I remember us walking to an ancient song
Dancing silver statues on a garden wall;
Our fragile fingers too brittle to grasp,
Too pretty to speak, too silent to fall.
Your intricate past, your secrets, shared another;
We touched, but spoke of nothing at all.
Now we are here, on the banks of nameless streams,
You with your emerald, I with my dreams.
Behind us are clouds, an eternity of trees;
I dare not retreat, for fear of the fear it brings
Nor meet with you while the torrent begins;
Yet I would try and try again,
Though the merciless water swirls and sings,
A thousand times a thousand tries
To swim the currents of your heart,
The shining oceans in your shimmering eyes.
