When You Went Away
by Alison  Mondale

 When you went away,
 I searched for life,
(Just like you told me to.)
 I kept your love,
(Just like you wanted me to.)
 I kept you,
(As you wished.)

 After you left me behind,
 I searched for freedom,
(To tame my soul.)
 I dreamed of your face,
(To keep you with me.)
 I kept you,
(But you ran away.)

 When you were gone,
I searched for all you taught me,
(Experience is the best teacher.)
I forgot what you did to me,
(To remember what you did for me.)
 I learned how to live.
(And left you in the ground.)
