Playing Bali
by Jemille Ronda Hardy
On this cool western night
I hear gamelon chimes
Clear as the day
You took me away to
see the dancers
in crumbling temple walls
Now you reach for me as
I drift on Indian seas
playing with waves
in warm Bali
Your eyes and hands
search for my mind
pulling me back from my
latest departure
Our contrast merges
on faded blue sheets
amber against ebony
Beautiful
I do not tell you
my family exalts
fair skin tones
building temple
walls of color
denying our dance
I drown family echoes
beneath gamelon chimes
and I will love you
with more than
a broken heart.
